BTMA: From Microsurgery to Aircraft Wings

At the upcoming ITMA Asia + CITME 2025 in Singapore, 20 member companies of the British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA) will present their solutions extending from advanced technologies to the healthcare and aerospace industries.

Safe Sutures in Medicine
Polymer- and metal-based materials used in medical suture production stand out with their biocompatibility. Fibre Extrusion Technology (FET) will introduce a new production technology based on supercritical CO₂.

Automated fibre placement (AFP) and automated tape laying (ATL) bring lightness and strength together in aircraft fuselage and wing surfaces. Cygnet Texkimp will unveil its new technology for this field for the first time in Singapore.

University-Industry Collaboration Drives Success
BTMA CEO Jason Kent emphasizes that strong collaboration with universities underpins the growth in advanced technology in the UK. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) is 10 times stronger than steel by weight. FET’s small-scale production systems pave the way for next-generation medical implants.

Next-Generation Prepreg Technology
Cygnet Texkimp’s production-scale prepreg tape slitting machine can reach speeds of up to 60 m/min. It provides industry professionals with the opportunity to test under real conditions.

Efficiency in Carbon and Aramid Fibres
Airbond’s pneumatic yarn splicing technologies deliver resource efficiency in carbon and aramid fibres. Work continues on next-generation carbon tape splicing and fully automated weaving systems.

“There is a spirit of openness and innovative collaboration in the UK in the field of advanced fibres and technical textiles. This is a promising development for the future,” says Jason Kent, BTMA CEO.

Participating BTMA Members: Airbond, Autofoam, AVA CAD/Cam, Cygnet Texkimp, Fibre Extrusion Technology, James Heal, MCL, Roaches, Saurer Fibrevision, SDC Enterprises, Sellers, Shelton Vision, Slack & Parr, Society of Dyers and Colourists, Strayfield, Tatham, The Textile Institute, Verivide, Vickers Oils, Wira Instrumentation.
