Three Ways to Be More Sustainable for Fashion Brands

The fashion industry has been widely criticized on the impacts to the environment up to date. The pressure on fashion companies to ensure transparency about the expanded supply chain has been increasing constantly. Many companies now are in the position of justifying their operations as sustainable and ethical. We now bring together three rules of sustainability in fashion for yours.

1) Design Products that are Sustainable and Meet Regulations

In its true definition, sustainability starts with access of resources before actually setting on a design and sustains through all stages. Modern product lifecycle management (PLM) tools can support fashion brands to administer materials that falls down to the yarn and fiber which they use in the desired standards. In this way, the products are more durable and can enjoy the usage potential for generations.

2) Extend Service Life by Considering Disassembly in Design

Many products go waste by the end of their usage cycle. Therefore, fashion brands should consider ways to extend the product life cycle and offer services such as repair, rental, resale and recycling. At this point, a modern, cloud-based institutional application platform can be helpful in supporting the circular economy.

Despite of demanding an operational transformation in the transition to the circular fashion from traditional business models, this approach brings in new opportunities for economic and environmental growth. Therefore, fashion brands should adopt sustainable applications. According to McKinsey studies, the consumer’s awareness on the environment has been on the rise and 67 per cent of the consumers regard the usage of sustainable materials as an important purchasing element. This requires fashion brands to seek ways to become sustainable and further to verify their results with the appropriate data.

3) Combine and Publish Data on Sustainability

Apart from launching products and processes that have lesser environmental impact, fashion brands should offer visibility and transparency about their sustainability programs to the stakeholders, consumers and auditory institutions. This makes it conditional for data collection and visibility for all levels of supply chain from the start of the production. This can be achieved by collecting and managing data on sustainability such as water usage, carbon footprint, energy usage, product composition and evaluating them with a business intelligence platform.

Embracing sustainability is an important step towards a better world. To start this journey, it is unavoidable for companies to put sustainability on their agenda.
